While shuffling through old family photos I'm reminded of days gone but never forgotten. Polyester, pork chops, and platforms. Bell bottoms, butterfly collars, and big hair resembling licorice flavored cotton candy. The perfect recipe to make one beseech the question "WTH were we thinking?!?". Every generation falls victim. No one is immune. We may even throw on some leg warmers, stirrup pants, and Members Only jackets to take a ride down 80's lane later, but for now, I will pay homage to the decade I was born......Circa '70 Sumthin'
Closing my eyes I can smell sage, patchouli.....incense. I conjure images of earth tones, rolling paper, and roach clips. I hear sounds of Rose Royces' Car Wash promising to put "more dip in my hip, and more glide in my stride". Which is exactly what I need to keep focus.
EYES
Eyes truly are the window to the soul. Soraya's eyes are made from polymer clay. They are hand painted light hazel and clear resin is added as a "lens" to give the eye depth and a glass-like appearance. The process is tedious so I make them in batches. The more I make, the more likely it will become that I have a pair with the soul I am searching for
Wigging
The challenge? Finding a material that achieved the nappy effect I was looking for. Luckily, I had polyfil and black acrylic on hand that served my purpose perfectly. I am quite pleased. The wigs are interchangeable secured with rare earth magnets. One magnet built into the head of the doll while the other is crafted into the wig itself
What good is the perfect Fro without the perfect pick?? POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
My next Challenge will be blushing and painting. This will be what brings Soraya to life. I remind myself to be patient, take a deep breath and let Mother Muse have her way.
